On Feb. 20, 1962, John Glenn, one of the seven original Mercury astronauts, climbed into a small capsule named Friendship 7, and blasted off, becoming the first American to orbit Earth. The flight helped the United States catch up with the Soviets, who had launched Yuri Gagarin into orbit 10 months earlier.
